The Boiling River

One of the most remarkable features of Santuario Huishtin is the fact that it is set on a boiling river that emits clouds of mineral river vapours into the air and enshrouds the area in mystery.  Known locally as "Shanay-timpishka" or "heated by the sun," the boiling river stretches up to seven miles through the rainforest and possesses great spiritual significance to the communities that surround it, being reputedly the home of Yakumama, the world serpent that breathes life and death into the Amazon. A source of drinking, cooking, and bathing water, the boiling river reaches an unbelievable 100C in places.  According to Geologist, Andres Ruzo, who has been researching the river the last couple of years, the site is utterly unique in the world, fed by a deep thermal undercurrent that is independent of an volcanic system. For anyone interested in nature and nature photography, a day trip to the river is entirely worth it, not to mention a visit to Santuario Huishtin and the beauty of the surrounding rainforest.  For more information about Shanay-timpishka, the world wonder that is the setting for Santuario Huishtin, watch the following TED talk.
